Light has a strong presence in the oeuvre of Ella Goldman, as is the case with circular motion, as a recollection channel to repetitive and ceremonial situations that the artist had experienced in childhood and adulthood. Encountering the research, held in the laboratory of Prof. Dror Fixler, had charged her with ideas and thoughts that swayed her to additional channels that are manifested in the work, and are related to both movement of light and rotation. One of the studies conducted in the laboratory is the identification of diseases by projecting different wavelengths light on fluorescent molecules that are marked with gold nanoparticles and materials of the fluorescent family. When these materials (such as the fluorescent molecule, which is etched on the work's Dreidels) are illuminated in a light of one color, they lose energy, and thereby emit light of a different color. This phenomenon is called fluorescence. Gold helps to concentrate the light in its vicinity and therefore the proximity to gold intensifies the fluorescence. The mobility of fluorescent molecules attached to a gold particle is limited, and the farther away they are from the particle, the faster their rotation becomes. When there is a protein in the body, indicating a biological activity that could be harmful, it cuts off the attachment between the fluorescent molecules and the gold nanoparticle, which increases molecules' mobility and rotation speed.
Same as light charges the fluorescent molecules with energy, so does it charge the artist with experiences and thoughts. The light that travels between the installation's Lower and upper parts is analogous to a liminal, suspended existence between different cultures and times. The release of the loaded energy, which, for the artist is expressed as a catalyst for creating, is expressed in the scientific research as a diagnostic illumination.
