Sync Variations

  • Artist: Dr. Elad Shniderman
Researcher: Prof. Moti Fridman, Dr. Shir Shahal, and Prof. Nir Davidson

In this work, a team of scientists and artists, including Prof. Moti Fridman, Dr. Elad Shniderman, Dr. Shir Shahal, and Prof. Nir Davidson, have embarked on an exploration of human networks and synchronization by coupling 16 violin players. The players endeavor to achieve synchronization by listening to one another through their earphones while a computer mixing system determines which players are coupled and can introduce delays between them. Despite the obstacles they face, the players persevere in their efforts to synchronize in accordance with the connectivity set by the mixing system. The transitions between different types of synchronization and chaos give rise to musical forms that combine into a unique and distinctive concert experience each time. In addition to the musical expression of being out of synchronization, there is a profound human element to this work. The violinists' struggle to return to the familiar experience of synchronization is reflected in their facial expressions and body language, adding a poignant layer to the performance. Visitors to the museum can experience this work through a dedicated video art display that surrounds them, providing a multi-sensory experience.
